Peer Review Policy
Submitted works should be original works. Simultaneous submissions, reprints, and translations of previously published articles are not accepted.
Type of preliminary review
The editors and associate editors conduct a preliminary review of all manuscripts submitted to the journal in order to determine their suitability for subsequent confidential review, where the authors’ and reviewers’ identities are masked.
Type of review
All manuscripts submitted for publication go through a confidential review process, where the authors’ and reviewers’ identities are masked.
Criteria for review
Criteria for review include, but are not limited to, the significance of the topic to higher education, completeness of the literature review, appropriateness and rigor of the research methods or historical analysis, and the quality of the discussion concerning the implications of the findings for theory, research, and practice.
Type of revisions process
Authors who are asked to revise and resubmit their manuscripts are expected to carefully attend to reviewers’ comments and recommendations and to indicate how they have responded to those comments/recommendations. In some instances, authors may be required to revise and resubmit a manuscript more than once.
Review process once revised
Revised manuscript are sent to the reviewers who originally made comments and recommendations regarding the manuscript, whenever possible. We rely on our editorial board and ad-hoc reviewers who volunteer their time and we try to give those reviewers enough time to provide thorough feedback. This process may take at least a couple of months when things are running smoothly. As we transition in as editors, one priority for us is to make the average time it takes for authors to get feedback reasonable. As our term proceeds, we hope to be able to report more information about review times.
- Initial review and editor’s decision 1-2 weeks
- Confidential review 6 weeks
- Authors’ revision (if requested) 3 months
- Confidential review (may be repeated) 6-8 weeks
- Final decision 1-2 weeks
Type of review for book reviews
Book reviews are the responsibility of the associate editor of book reviews. Decisions about acceptance of a book review are made by that associate editor.
