Accessibility Statement of Intent

Commitment to Accessibility

At Johns Hopkins University Press, we envision a future where knowledge enriches the lives of every person and are committed to providing readers with full and equitable access to our content and services across all products, platforms, and websites.

Compliance

We are actively working toward meeting accessibility requirements as mandated by Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the European Accessibility Act. In compliance with these standards, our digital content and online resources are designed to conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA (our ebooks conform to WCAG 2.2 Level AA).

Common accessibility features include alternative text for images, semantic structuring, table of contents navigation, language tagging, sufficient color contrast, keyboard navigation, and accessibility metadata.

Accessibility in Practice

Our frontlist ebooks are fully accessible; our complete backlist of 2600 titles has been remediated to meet current accessibility standards. Hopkins Press ebooks are available in accessible formats from Bookshare (US), the Royal National Institute of the Blind (UK), and all retail vendors, digital textbook providers, and discoverability partners with whom we work.

Journals and ebooks are hosted online by Project MUSE, whose accessibility workflow now includes robust checks and metadata enrichment to help publishers, libraries, and researchers identify accessible content. Please refer to their Accessibility Statement and downloadable Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT 2.5) at https://about.muse.jhu.edu/about/accessibility/.

Ongoing Efforts

We acknowledge that some formats currently fall short of accessibility standards and are actively working to address those gaps. We continuously assess and improve our platforms and content to meet evolving standards and user needs. This includes regular audits, user feedback integration, and staff training on accessibility best practices.

Access Working Group

The Access Working Group is a cross-divisional team at Hopkins Press tasked with developing accessibility strategies and best practices that align with the Press’s mission to bring the benefits of discovery to the world and support our core values of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access.
