Peer Review Policy

Theatre Journal is a fully peer-reviewed journal published through Johns Hopkins Press in affiliation with the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE). We feature original contemporary and historical studies and theoretical inquiries that analyze theatre and performance (6,000-9,000 words) as well as Performance and Book reviews. The work should be original, and we do not accept simultaneous submissions. Theatre Journal publishes two general issues and two special issues per year, in March, June, September, and December, Submissions to general issues are on a rolling basis, and submissions to special issues should respond to the calls for papers.

The review process is as follows:All submissions are read by the Editor and Co-Editor who make the first decision to reject, send back for revise and resubmit, or send out to peer review. Rejections are sent with Editor feedback. Essays are sent to two peer reviewers and the process is anonymous.

Our guidelines for Peer Reviewers are as follows:

As you prepare your review, please consider the following:

  • How would you characterize the author's argument?
  • Does the author make a substantial enough case for the significance of this essay?
  • What are the major points?
  • What are the strengths of the article?
  • What are its weaknesses?

Theatre Journal seeks to publish the best articles in theatre, dance, and performance studies, essays that are on the cutting edge and that push the field forward.

Given these criteria, what critical revisions would you recommend?

Revisions are reviewed by both Editors who, at that point, make a formal invitation for publication. Authors are usually alerted if the submission is not going to peer review within one to two months. If essays are sent out for peer review, authors can expect to hear back within 4-5 months. Once accepted, essays are usually published.
