Peer Review Policy

Feminist Formations invites submissions that reflect the journal’s mission to cultivate a forum where feminists from around the world articulate research, theory, activism, teaching, and learning, thereby showcasing new feminist formations. An interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal, we publish innovative work by scholars, activists, and practitioners in feminist, gender, and sexuality studies. Our subject matter includes national, global, and transnational feminist thought and practice; the cultural and social politics of genders and sexualities; and historical and contemporary studies of gendered experience. The journal values established and emerging lines of inquiry and methods that engage the complexities of gender as implicated in forms of power such as race, ethnicity, class, nation, migration, ability, and religion.

Peer Review Process

The cover page should contain the following acknowledgment: “This is a draft copy of a manuscript submitted to Feminist Formations. If it is accepted for publication, the copyright will be assigned to the publisher, the Johns Hopkins University Press.” We do not accept submissions of work that are being reviewed by another journal.

The Editor reviews all manuscripts and determines those to be sent out for external review. This decision is based on overall fit with the mission and values of the journal, engagement with existing scholarship in the field, quality of writing, and structure of the argument. Manuscripts selected to undergo review will be subject to anonymous peer review by two or more external readers. Readers are selected for their expertise in the subject areas, and are invited to respond within four weeks. They are asked to provide constructive feedback to authors, and to recommend to accept, revise and resubmit, or reject the manuscript. Once the reviews are in, the Editor evaluates the reports and makes a decision to accept, invite revision and resubmission, or reject the manuscript. When a manuscript is revised and resubmitted, every effort is made to invite the original reviewers to evaluate the revised manuscript. When this is not possible, a new reader is invited and provided with the original version of the manuscript, the first reader reports, and the revised manuscript with the author’s response to the original reviewers. When a manuscript is selected for publication, the Editor will provide additional feedback to finalize revisions before the manuscript is moved to the production stage. Then, the Managing Editor will communicate with the author and assist in preparation for publication. Our review process generally takes four to six months.

Feminist Formations does not accept unsolicited book reviews or book review essays. Our Editor selects book reviews from experts in the field. Download a sample book review. In writing a review for the Feminist Formations, please keep our guidelines in mind:

• Briefly describe and/or summarize the book(s) or film(s).
• Evaluate, but do not censure. If you think a book or film is truly awful, drop it from your review and let it die a quiet death.
• Explain the ways in which the works relate to other work on the subject.
  Note the extent to which the authors address appropriate issues of race, class, and sexual orientation as well as gender.
• Try to give reasonably equal attention to all books under review.
• Assess practical applications, especially teaching, in a wide range of feminist contexts.
• Please write in a language and style accessible to a diverse feminist readership, avoiding jargon, technical terms, and references that would be unfamiliar to those outside specific disciplines.
• Reviews must be typed in Microsoft Word and doubled spaced with unjustified right margin. Please be sure to precede the review with double-spaced citation(s) in the following format:

  Women’s Work and Chicano Families by Patricia Zavella. Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 1987, 191 pp., $24.95 hardcover, $8.95 paper.

• Prices can be found by searching online for the list price at Amazon.com.
• Please do not exceed your allotted word length (one book – up to 1,500 words; two books – up to 2,250 words, and 750 words for each successive book). Reviews that exceed the allotted length will, most likely, have to be shortened.
• Along with your review, please submit a short autobiography. Include your position and institutional affiliation (if any), research interests and/or one or two key publications, and e-mail address. Unless you say otherwise, we will print your e-mail address at the end of your autobiography and invite readers to send correspondence to you.
