A Field Guide to Coastal Fishes: From Alaska to California

Val Kells, Luiz A. Rocha, and Larry G. Allen

A sequel of sorts to A Field Guide to Coastal Fishes: From Main to Texas, this new volume serves as a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated guide to West Coast marine fishes. The book was recently made Nature's Cool Green Science blog's list of "6 Great New Books for the Fish Nerd's Library."

Check out this behind-the-scenes look at what goes into illustrating a project like this, courtesy of artist Val Kells:

Life in the Dark: Illuminating Biodiversity in the Shadowy Haunts of Planet Earth

Danté Fenolio

This coffee-table book is filled with stunning, never-before-seen photographs of creatures that live in complete darkness. Dr. Fenolio, the director of conservation and research at the San Antonio Zoo, travels the globe capturing deep-sea and cave animals and has displayed many of his finest catches in this project. You can view a sampling of this book here, along with an interview with Dr. Fenolio from National Geographic.

Below is a video clip from Dr. Fenolio himself, pulled from his website, www.lifeinthedark.net.
