“John W. Garrett and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad”
A book talk by author Kathleen Waters Sander
April 18, 2017 / 12:30 p.m.
John Work Garrett served as president of the B&O Railroad from 1858 to 1884 and ranked among the great power brokers of his time. One of President Abraham Lincoln's most trusted confidantes and strategists, a close friend to Johns Hopkins and the great university he founded, Garrett was at the center of momentous events in Baltimore and the nation in the nineteenth century. Kathleen Waters Sander’s new book immerses us in the story of the B&O’s remarkable ambition and growth as the exciting context for Garrett’s rise to power and wealth as one of the first of the famed Gilded Age tycoons. This newly-released book will be available for sale and signing, along with the author’s 2008 biography of Mary Elizabeth Garrett.
Reservations required. $22 per person. Members should contact the Hopkins Club to make reservations; non-members may contact Jack Holmes at 410-516-6928 to attend as guests of the Press.
