Metadata & Linked Data Strategist

Project MUSE is a division of The Johns Hopkins University Press. Founded in 1878, the Press is the oldest continuously operating university press in the United States as well as one of the largest. The Press is a leader in scholarly book, journal, and digital publishing.

Project MUSE is a multi-million dollar electronic database of academic books and journals in the humanities and social sciences. We produce content from over 260 academic publishers, including more than 600 academic journals and 40,000 front-list and back-list monographs. We recently received a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon foundation to expand our open access offerings.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Is Project MUSE’s metadata expert and is responsible for assessing, developing, and documenting internal policies for metadata creation, application, and maintenance.
  • Participates in large-scale research and development projects related to metadata discovery, interoperability, and identity management, including the development of a linked data environment and of descriptive metadata standards throughout MUSE.
  • Ensures compliance with evolving national and international metadata standards.
  • Oversees relationships between Project MUSE and discovery services to ensure that metadata delivery is efficient and accurate.
  • Acts as technical liaison between linking partners and Project MUSE.
  • Works closely with technical staff and ebooks coordinator to develop an effective workflow for ingesting, tracking, and delivering metadata.
  • Serves as consultant to other divisions of the JHUP about metadata
  • Fosters collaborative efforts related to metadata between Project MUSE and other JHUP divisions.


  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of progressive experience with metadata projects
  • Practical experience managing all aspects of metadata creation for digital content, including selecting, implementing, and documenting metadata standards, overseeing quality control, and mapping between datasets
  • Demonstrated experience with current cataloging procedures and principles as defined in RDA and AACR2, and the MARC bibliographic, holdings, and authorities formats
  • Demonstrable knowledge of and ability to apply metadata standards (including MODS, Dublin Core, EAD, METS, OAI, TEI, and relevant thesauri and/or ontologies, as required by special projects) as well as the ability to implement and analyze these standards
  • Familiarity with machine actionable languages, such as XML and RDF
  • Familiarity with linked data principles and standards

Graphic Designer

The Graphic Designer conceives and implements design solutions to increase the awareness and adoption of JHU Press’ 80+ scholarly journals and 20+ client societies. 

As a member of a small marketing team with a reputation for making a big impact, the Graphic Designer provides design support to the JHU Press Journals Division using print and digital media. 

The scope of this position is to perform a wide range of duties from the routine to complex. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conceptualizing, designing, and producing websites, promotional landing pages, email campaigns, direct mail campaigns, catalogs, advertisements, order forms, flyers, specialty items, exhibit display/signage and marketing presentations.

This role encompasses project management and some administrative responsibilities, so candidates must be comfortable proactively sharing updates with other team members and managing multiple projects with multiple internal and external clients.

The Graphic Designer reports to the Director of Journal Sales and Marketing.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conceptualizes designs and prepares art for presentation and mass production with significant focus on both meeting client/customer needs as well as effective use of resources and budget.
  • Supports the project management, copy, production, and print purchase functions associated with the development of a variety of marketing materials.
  • Writes and edits basic copy and headlines, as appropriate.
  • Works with clients/customers to effectively interpret creative/production needs.
  • Coordinates with outside vendors, project managers, clients, and other marketing staff to deliver projects on schedule, within budget, and within internal standards and processes.
  • Produces webpages, client websites and other digital assets using Drupal.
  • Provides content management, technical and training support across multiple sites including, the JHU Press website and all JHU Press client hosted independent websites.
  • Presents finished layouts to Journals Publisher, Director of Journal Sales and Marketing and client for approval.
  • Maintains and archives design files and graphic standards guides.
  • Adheres to JHU Press creative and graphic guidelines/standards in the development of all materials.
  • Addresses technical/file trouble-shooting and design issues or considerations.
  • Assists staff, vendors or other customers by answering questions related to design production processes, procedures and services.
  • Stays current on latest industry technologies, trends and strategies.
  • Adapts to the changing needs of the department, develops new skills, and assists with projects outside of normal job responsibilities as needed.



  • Bachelor's degree in fine arts, graphic design, or related field required.


  • Two years of experience in graphic design and website development and maintenance required.
  • Work in academic publishing or association marketing environment is helpful.
  • Must have a strong portfolio demonstrating a range of print and online graphic design skills.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
  • Advanced skills in Adobe Creative suite (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) is required.
  • Experience working with HTML and CSS is required.
  • Solid understanding of image formats (EPS, TIF, GIF, JPEG, PDF) is required.
  • Experience working with Drupal, and WordPress is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter is preferred.
  • Experience with Infographics is a plus.
  • Experience with Emma Email Marketing Solutions is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of video production is a plus.
  • Strong layout and design skills as well as a thorough understanding of prepress and print production are required.

Web Development Manager

The Web Development Manager will lead a team of developers in designing, creating, maintaining, and updating web pages and services. The candidate will ensure adherence to quality standards and review project deliverables to ensure project goals are accomplished. The primary product the position will develop and maintain is The Journals Division shopping cart and the Journals Associations web sites.

The candidate will participate in all aspects of designing, developing and maintaining electronic projects. This includes development of work plans, schedules, project estimates, resource plans and status reports. The candidate should have extensive experience in user interface design. The candidate will design and implement programs utilizing Drupal modules and PHP along with a variety of tools such as HTML, XML, AJAX, JavaScript, JQuery, and CSS, to provide web-based services/products. Candidate should be familiar with all current cross-browser requirements and determination to debug and test what you have built. In addition, the candidate will analyze, review, and alter programs to increase operating efficiency, increase accessibility and adapt to new standards. The job requires the ability to coordinate projects across divisions within the Press and vendors.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Applies system analysis to solve problems, including determining software and system functional and technical specifications.
  • Meets with technical staff to clarify specifications; takes program specifications, description of data, what processes are preferred and analyzes problems to determine solution steps.
  • Develops or modifies computer programs; develops test plans and performs unit, system and integrated testing for individual assignments, vendor software releases.
  • Develops, maintains, documents and test new or existing programs; adheres to project-wide standards for data collection/storage, structured programming techniques, documentation requirements, testing, reporting, software/hardware releases.
  • Uses programming and database knowledge and critical thinking to resolve moderately complex technical or procedural problems.
  • High level of awareness, approach and respect for the user experience.


Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a related field. Three years related experience. Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards related experience. Significant undergraduate programming coursework or independent project can be considered as related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Knowledge of Drupal module development and PHP. Working knowledge of HTML, MySQL, AJAX, JavaScript, JQuery, XML (including parsing, writing and xml schema), and CSS. Familiarity with secure coding standards including PCI-DSS. Ability and willingness to learn new programming languages and technologies quickly. Must be highly service oriented, self-motivated, and possess a team working attitude with strong and effective communication skills. Publishing working experience is desired but not required.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  • Greeting guests and visitors to the Press.
  • Directing guests to the appropriate departments and individuals.
  • Answering incoming calls and forwarding them to the appropriate individuals.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Providing guest with visitor badges (for CISP compliance).
  • Managing the inventory and restocking the supply room for the Press.
  • Placing special orders for office supplies.
  • Opening and sorting Journals mail.
  • Opening and sorting HFS mail as needed.
  • Sorting and distributing incoming faxes.
  • Accepting small deliveries and releasing packages for pick-up.
  • Circulating professional publications.
  • Assisting with the lobby display of Press books and materials.
  • Sorting and prepping “Notification Letters” for HFS.
  • Acting as facilities liaison for employees during sick/vacation coverage.
  • Coordinating coverage with the mailroom.

Further duties may include:

  • Assisting with mailroom-related issues, if needed.
  • Assisting HFS as needed.
  • Assisting with in-house events.
  • Other duties may be assigned by the supervisor as time allows.


High School diploma or GED required. Experience answering phones and in customer service required; interpersonal skills are important.

Rights & Permissions Office Assistant

Provides clerical assistance in Rights and Permissions department.  Must interact courteously and professionally with authors, domestic and international publishers, members of the media, and colleagues requiring the assistance of the department.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Files U.S. copyright registration for all books and journals within 90 days of receipt
  • When certificate is received, enters TX information in Filemaker and files certificate in Director’s files
  • Ensures prompt restocking to warehouse of any excess print inventory
  • Creates and affixes labels for all new books and journals. Arranges newly labeled titles on shelves in the press library and records shelving locating in Filemaker database
  • Shelves books that have been removed from the library, tracks down (and occasionally makes arrangements for replacing) missing items
  • Collects newly published journals from Director’s office and shelves them
  • Ensures that library shelves are neat and tidy
  • Fills orders for gratis books and catalogs. Distributes to authors their copies of translated books received from international publishers
  • Maintains official contract files, including preparation of new file folders. Files invoices for permissions granted and files paperwork related to the permissions received
  • On a semi-annual basis researches and identifies addresses of journal contributors with royalty payments due and contacts them to solicit an updated W-9 form
  • Sets up new vendors in SAP for journals contributors with royalty payments due
  • For all newly executed publishing contracts, enters into Filemaker data on sales territories, publishing rights and subsidiary rights and restrictions
  • Misc. duties as assigned.


High School Diploma/'GED required. College degree preferred. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula (30 undergraduate degree credits/semester hours or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience). Six months related experience required. Clerical, bookkeeping, or library experience a plus.

Special skills and knowledge

MS Word, Excel required. Filemaker Pro preferred.
