Marketing and Sales Director, Books Division

Johns Hopkins University Press invites applications for Marketing and Sales Director in the books division to join a team of exceptional professionals committed to bringing knowledge to international audiences in innovative ways that advances teaching and research and enlightens dialog and decisions that affect people’s lives worldwide.  As part of the executive leadership at JHUP, the Marketing and Sales director participates in leading press-wide strategic initiatives, has the opportunity to experiment with new ways of engaging readers, and collaborates with colleagues across all divisions (Books, Journals, Project MUSE, and Hopkins Fulfillment Services). 

Primary duties and responsibilities: 
  • Creating strategic direction and vision for all worldwide marketing and sales aspects of the book division ensuring maximum dissemination of ideas and achieving financial goals. 
  • Overseeing domestic and international sales,  social media engagement, web site development, publicity, advertising, promotion, exhibits, special sales, and any new ways developed to reach audiences.
  • Working closely with the Press’s editorial team to help them select, develop, and publish excellent books. 
  • Identifying, recruiting, developing, and leading a team of extraordinary sales, publicity, and promotion professionals to collaborate across all departments and divisions to meet the mission, goals, and vision of the Press.  Creating measurable and obtainable but also aspirational performance goals.  Works with an international team of sales representatives.
  • Designing, implementing, and evaluating marketing and sales strategies and campaigns to effectively reach readers with 150+ new books per year and 4,000 backlist titles; employing analytics to measure audience reach.  Opening new markets; exploiting existing ones. 
  • Conducting research on the most effective ways in which to reach and engage audiences covering aspects of the brand, product, promotion, pricing, and distribution strategies and across all modes of engagement.
  • Building network of industry influencers, calling on these influencers to advise on new ways in which to ensure that all authors reach their intended audiences and achieve desired impact. 
  • Managing the JHUP brand, measuring perceptions, identifying gaps in those perceptions and JHUP’s ideal, and revising messaging and outreach accordingly. Creating branding platform for all stakeholders from author to end reader. 
  • Monitoring industry trends and the competitive landscape, identifying gaps that JHUP could effectively fill and proposing changes in product development, pricing, and distribution.     
  • Developing author relationship program in conjunction with acquisitions and other departments, implement strategy, and measure effectiveness. 
  • Maximizing dissemination while reaching financial goals through strategic partnerships, negotiating contracts, and monitoring performance.
  • Identifying synergies across divisions and implementing collaborative projects to benefit all aspects of the operation. 
  • Providing guidance on print-run and inventory decisions. 
  • Working with CFO and director to create rational budgets and deliver revenue and expense outcomes that meet or exceed those budgets.
Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s degree and minimum 10 years of relevant leadership experience excelling in book marketing and/or sales, understanding all aspects of scholarly and trade publishing. 

  • Deeply knowledgeable about digital publishing but also grounded in traditional print.
  • Expertise in licensing and negotiating contracts and terms.    
  • Stellar at all aspects of communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to form collaborative teams and instill passion and drive to excel in those teams of professionals. 
  • Creative thinker; embracing new ideas; managing change; passionate about exploiting the potential of JHUP.
