Acquisition Editor

Johns Hopkins University Press seeks a creative, entrepreneurial, and passionate editor to acquire 25 new book projects each year in the areas of American History and Current Affairs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • establish priorities and consult with qualified academics to ensure the resulting publishing program reflects Hopkins standing;

  • work with the Editorial Director and the Press Director to develop a strategic editorial plan for growth of the list;

  • Keep the Hopkins books at the forefront of these fields and track current research suitable for publication in book form;

  • Regularly visit key campuses, attend professional conferences, cultivate relationships with leading researchers, and engage deeply with the relevant literature;

  • Establish an active and engaged presence within the community of scholars in this field;

  • Contact prospective authors and commission book-length works that will make valuable contributions to existing knowledge;

  • Evaluate resulting proposals for professional, trade, and course books, book series, and reference works;

  • Arrange for projects to be independently reviewed by qualified experts;

  • Negotiate contracts for books and book series; work with authors to ensure that contractual terms are met; prepare publishing plans for projects ready to go into production;

  • Work with editorial, production, and design departments to ensure the efficient production of projects in print and digital formats, and with marketing and sales departments to ensure the effective distribution of books to their intended audiences;

  • Present new and proposed book projects to the Press’s staff and its editorial board;

  • Prepare annual qualitative and quantitative assessments of the list along with list profiles and other materials to help market and promote the list;

  • Work cooperatively with our team of acquisitions editors and assistants;

  • Set standards of professionalism and leadership in interactions with all internal staff;

  • Represent the Johns Hopkins University Press and Johns Hopkins University in all external interactions with utmost professionalism;

  • Perform other duties as needed or required.

Qualifications

Required: qualifications include an undergraduate degree; at least 5 years of relevant publishing experience; a strong track record of acquisitions in the field; excellent written and verbal communication skills; proven analytic ability; knowledge of the higher education community; ability to work with academic authors; and knowledge of the publishing industry, particularly scholarly publishing. Campus and conference travel is expected. This position is based in Baltimore Maryland. 

Preferred: advanced degree; demonstrated engagement with the scholarly community.

Manager, Journals Direct Response & Renewals

The primary function of the position is to manage all processes related to the production, design, and execution of all direct response campaigns, renewals, and other assigned marketing activities. The overall impact of this function is 1) increasing the awareness of and the number of subscribers and members to the 80+ JHUP journal/online reference products that we publish and 20 scholarly associations whose memberships we manage. 2) This role is professional in nature.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

This position will be responsible for:

  • Project management.  Assuming overall responsibility for all logistics associated with planning, producing, executing, and evaluating all JHUP Journal direct response and renewal campaigns.
  • Budget responsibility.  Creating and managing budgets for each subscription/membership campaign and renewal effort.  Tracking and reporting marketing budget, expense, and sales information to JHUP Finance Dept., Journals Publisher, or Director, Journals Sales and Marketing when requested.
  • Content creation. Writing, editing, and revising copy for all direct response, renewals, and other special sales or promotions communications as warranted.
  • Quality control. Ensuring that marketing messages are supportive of and consistent with defined marketing strategies.
  • Conceiving and incorporating viable strategies, premiums, and offers to enhance the effectiveness of both new subscriber/member and renewal marketing campaigns.
  • Initiating mailing list exchanges, mail list rentals, and conducting market research where applicable.
  • Quantitative analysis. Tracking, testing, and analyzing new subscriber campaign and renewal effort results. Developing and producing monthly, quarterly and end of year marketing reports or on –demand as needed.
  • Participating in Division-wide activation and de-activation processes.
  • Managing the JHUP Journals “Special Offers” program.
  • Database system administration.   Effectively managing and utilizing the data and processes within the Journals fulfillment database that control direct response, pricing, prospecting, source and discount codes, list management, data cleanup activities and all renewal processes.
  • Knowledge resource.   Remaining current on developments in the fields of marketing, communications and public relations, not-for-profit management, and scholarly publishing.
  • Provide support to Director, Journals Sales and Marketing as assigned.

Qualifications

College Degree Required, 3-5 years experience in marketing sales, public relations, or publishing. Extensive consumer or business to business direct marketing. Work in an academic publishing or association marketing environment helpful, as is familiarity with merge-purge and USPS mailing regulations.

Special Knowledge and SkillL

  • Highly developed writing, grammar, and communications skills.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative reporting skills.
  • Internet familiarity, proficiency with word processing, databases, and reporting software (esp. FileMaker, Excel and Crystal Reports).
  • Previous experience working with subscription fulfillment systems is desired.
  • A high degree of independent action is required as is the ability to manage multiple, complex projects.
  • Establishing and managing budgets, priorities and schedules is an essential requirement as is working cooperatively with outside contacts and inside personnel.

Interpersonal Skills:

External Contacts

Work with editors and association officers on concepts for direct response promotions and for leads on testimonials and mailing lists. Select and manage relationships with outside printers and mail shops for most effective print buying and scheduling.

Internal Contacts:

Director, Journals Sales and Marketing, Journals Marketing Department, Journals Publisher, Project Muse Staff, Press IT staff, Books Division Marketing Staff, Journals Fulfillment Manager and Journals Customer Service Representatives, Production Manager and Production staff, and Press accounting staff. External Contacts: Editors, Association Executives, mailing list vendors, printers, mailing houses, freelance designers, media representatives and colleagues at other University Presses. The ability to communicate effectively with staff concerning IT-related issues is essential.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Limited. Oversees duties of student assistance when appropriate.

Position directly supports the mission of The Johns Hopkins University Press: to excel in the selection, preparation, and innovative dissemination of works that advance teaching and research and engage a diverse audience of readers.

Teaming Skills:

Incumbent must work very closely with the Director, Journals Sales and Marketing, the Journals Marketing Department, Journals Division staff, other JHUP Division staff, editors and association officers to define campaign objectives and implement projects.

Editorial Assistant

The Editorial Assistant will provide comprehensive support for acquisitions editors, who evaluate and acquire scholarly books for publication by the Johns Hopkins University Press.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for routing aspects of acquisition work to enable editors to review, develop, and procure suitable book-length manuscripts; analyze editorial, copyright, and typographical complexities in book manuscripts and prepare manuscripts for copyediting; communicate by letter, telephone and email with authors, readers, agents, and foreign publishers and agencies under differing degrees of supervision by the editors; monitor status of manuscripts-in-process, readers' reports, contracts and reprint permissions; perform production-cost calculations and other financial calculations; analyze illustrated materials using Adobe Photoshop and other software. 

Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED required.  Bachelor's degree preferred.

Two years' experience.  Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

UX Developer

This position will be a member of Project MUSE's technical development team. The position works with a small talented team with strong programming skills.  This position will help bridge the back-end user customization options with a front-end that is a UX match, collaborating on the design and implementation of user interfaces to ensure a simple and clean user experience. This position will act as a point of contact for maintaining the standards and quality of Project MUSE’s front-end web sites. This is a front-end motivated role, but will require some knowledge of back-end services. You will have to be able to think on both sides of the connection. Experience with MySQL and perl to run solo projects is very beneficial.   This position will report to the Manager, Publishing Technologies at Project MUSE

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop solid front-end solutions that integrate with other systems, technology, and back-end functionality with a heavy focus on creating the ideal user experience.

  • Use analytics, user insight, best practices, and competitor analysis to inform design decisions.

  • Provide quality design assets and expert UI/UX direction across the platform.

  • Strive for responsive layouts using standard practices.

  • Act as a primary point of contact and participate in all aspects of website development including analysis, planning, testing, development, and maintenance.

Qualifications

  • Ability to code for responsive design.

  • Experience in web development with client-side scripting and JavaScript frameworks, including jQuery.

  • Understanding of asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, and AJAX is required.

  • Familiarity with at least one server-side language.Perl is a bonus.

  • Working environment is UNIX.

  • An interest, willingness and demonstrated ability to learn new programming languages.

  • Knowledge of front-end defensive/secure coding practices (Cross Site Scripting, Cross Site Request Forgery, SQL Injection, and so on)

Sr. Programmer Analyst

The Senior Programmer Analyst is a member of Project MUSE's technical development team involved in software and database development. The position works with a small talented team who continues to output and design innovative publishing features in record time, with the quality and depth of a large organization.  Project MUSE has thrived on creating custom solutions, offering flexibility to both the product and the customer.  This position will report to the Manager, Publishing Technologies at Project MUSE.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops or modifies computer programs; develops test plans and performs unit, system and integrated testing for individual assignments, and or vendor software releases.

  • Database design, development and implementation, including user and system requirements collection, proto-typing and testing, application database schemes design and integration with applications, production maintenance and user support.

  • Develops, maintains, documents and tests new or existing programs; adheres to project wide standards for data collection/storage, structured programming techniques, documentation requirements, testing, reporting, software/hardware releases.

  • Uses programming knowledge and critical thinking to resolve moderately complex technical or procedural problems

  • Create reports and work with end users on report specifications; create and run queries as needed, both scripted and ad hoc.

  • Participates in institutional-level information technology initiatives as assigned.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Metadata & Linked Data Strategist

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Is Project MUSE’s metadata expert and is responsible for assessing, developing, and documenting internal policies for metadata creation, application, and maintenance.
  • Participates in large-scale research and development projects related to metadata discovery, interoperability, and identity management, including the development of a linked data environment and of descriptive metadata standards throughout MUSE.
  • Ensures compliance with evolving national and international metadata standards.
  • Oversees relationships between Project MUSE and discovery services to ensure that metadata delivery is efficient and accurate.
  • Acts as technical liaison between linking partners and Project MUSE.
  • Works closely with technical staff and ebooks coordinator to develop an effective workflow for ingesting, tracking, and delivering metadata.
  • Serves as consultant to other divisions of the JHUP about metadata
  • Fosters collaborative efforts related to metadata between Project MUSE and other JHUP divisions.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of progressive experience with metadata projects
  • Practical experience managing all aspects of metadata creation for digital content, including selecting, implementing, and documenting metadata standards, overseeing quality control, and mapping between datasets
  • Demonstrated experience with current cataloging procedures and principles as defined in RDA and AACR2, and the MARC bibliographic, holdings, and authorities formats
  • Demonstrable knowledge of and ability to apply metadata standards (including MODS, Dublin Core, EAD, METS, OAI, TEI, and relevant thesauri and/or ontologies, as required by special projects) as well as the ability to implement and analyze these standards
  • Familiarity with machine actionable languages, such as XML and RDF
  • Familiarity with linked data principles and standards
