Marketing Specialist

The Marketing Specialist provides day-to-day support to the Marketing Manager and the Sales & Marketing team. The Marketing Specialist has responsibility for a broad range of marketing and communications tasks in support of sales and acquisitions activities, raising awareness and brand profile, and engaging diverse audiences. The ideal candidate has a digitally inspired mind with excellent editing and writing skills, is detail-oriented, and able to multi-task without losing sight of the goals of Project MUSE and its role as a trusted source of content for the academic community.

A keen understanding of digital and print marketing tactics, and writing and editing for multiple formats, is a must. Working in a digital first environment, the preferred candidate is an individual with strong creative and analytical skills, able to find innovative ways to connect and communicate with our audiences and to measure and report on the success of those efforts. Experience developing and deploying web, social, email, and print content is required, with a background in libraries, higher education, or electronic publishing an advantage.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Marketing Specialist will:

  • Develop ideas and brainstorm engaging content for diverse audiences reached by Project MUSE including but not limited to: librarians, publishers, scholars, consortia, researchers, and friends of Project MUSE as well as internal staff and various partners and supporters of Johns Hopkins University Press
  • Provide day-to-day support and development of written and visual content for the Project MUSE website and social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and more
  • Assist with social media to meet marketing goals with an emphasis on audience growth and development; utilize analytics to evaluate efforts and refine approach as needed
  • Operate a content management system with full authority to edit existing web pages and create new pages. Use HTML coding when necessary to edit pages. Maintain consistency in appearance across all pages relative to vocabulary, page style, and page linking in accordance with website style guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate print informational materials, supporting the digital materials for librarians and end users to promote MUSE content and to provide instruction for using MUSE effectively for research.
  • Coordinate information flow to various audiences via email lists, electronic newsletters, conference handouts, and related materials. Responsible for maintenance and updates for internal email lists housed on marketing automation vendor’s servers.
  • Develop and create instructional and promotional content that incorporates images/image galleries, video, slideshows, and other multimedia elements as appropriate
  • Support Project MUSE at conferences and with event planning/participation. Assist with event logistics, service ordering, catering, travel planning, and staffing exhibit booths/tables and events as needed
  • Work with external vendors for graphic design services, printing, promotional materials, marketing automation services, and others as applicable
  • Create status reports & marketing summaries as instructed
  • Monitor alerts, listservs, blogs, library publications, and related channels for mentions of MUSE and MUSE competitors and include in departmental marketing report. Stay abreast of relevant global library and academic news, developments and events and keep Project MUSE staff up to date
  • Keep abreast of new social media sites, web technologies, and digital marketing trends; implement these new technologies in developing campaigns and update current campaigns to include new information
  • Responsible for departmental procurement card purchasing and reconciliation

 

Independent Action and Contacts:

After an initial training and orientation period, will work independently on broad tasks assigned by the supervisor. Will work collaboratively across several Project MUSE departments, especially with colleagues in marketing/sales, customer support, and technical services. Externally, will have regular contact with library customers, participating publisher representatives, and scholarly user audiences through both written/digital materials and in person.

Qualifications

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint
  • Expertise with image manipulation/creation (e.g., Adobe Photoshop), and screen casting (e.g., Camtasia)
  • Working knowledge of graphic design and desktop publishing, preferably Microsoft Publisher and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience with website development and maintenance, information architecture, content management systems, HTML
  • Experience with social media and Google analytics; knowledge of developing and implementing Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with an exceptional ability to communicate through written materials and the ability to translate technical concepts into broadly accessible content
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to quickly learn new subjects in a fast changing industry, and absorb new information
  • Strong customer service orientation

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Two years related experience required. Three years of marketing, communications or public relations work experience preferred.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. 
  • Able to travel internationally, as needed. 

JHU Equivalency Formula:  18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Metadata & Linked Data Strategist

Project MUSE is a division of The Johns Hopkins University Press. Founded in 1878, the Press is the oldest continuously operating university press in the United States as well as one of the largest. The Press is a leader in scholarly book, journal, and digital publishing.

Project MUSE is a multi-million dollar electronic database of academic books and journals in the humanities and social sciences. We produce content from over 260 academic publishers, including more than 600 academic journals and 40,000 front-list and back-list monographs. We recently received a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon foundation to expand our open access offerings.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of progressive experience with metadata projects
  • Practical experience managing all aspects of metadata creation for digital content, including selecting, implementing, and documenting metadata standards, overseeing quality control, and mapping between datasets
  • Demonstrated experience with current cataloging procedures and principles as defined in RDA and AACR2, and the MARC bibliographic, holdings, and authorities formats
  • Demonstrable knowledge of and ability to apply metadata standards (including MODS, Dublin Core, EAD, METS, OAI, TEI, and relevant thesauri and/or ontologies, as required by special projects) as well as the ability to implement and analyze these standards
  • Familiarity with machine actionable languages, such as XML and RDF
  • Familiarity with linked data principles and standards

Production Controller/Production Coordinator

Senior staff position as Production Controller for up to 120 new book and reprint titles per year. Project manager of digital workflow of edited manuscripts for design and to typesetters; route text, jacket, and art copy and proofs; post final files to printers; and distribute advanced books copies within the Books division. Responsible for daily electronic schedule updates, instruct vendors, confirm specifications and print runs, and issue purchase orders. Optional: Selected cover designs and text design supervision to assist Art Director. Position reports to the Design and Production Manager.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Project Management: Manage production of half of new books and 1st time paperbacks, along with reprint titles as assigned by the Design & Production Manager, by working with designers, compositors, printers, and in-house personnel. Monitor and update the database schedules to keep the projects timely and on budget. Communicate regularly with internal and external companies and individuals.  (60%)

 

Quality Review: Review and internally route printed sheets, digital book proofs, art proofs, jackets and color proofs from printers. Clearly instruct vendors on desired changes requested.  (30%)

 

Book Design: Assists the Art Director as needed, including modifying 8-10 format text design titles a season, sizing accompanying art, and reviewing text and art proofs; and also new and revised edition cover designs. (10%)

 

Qualifications

 

Knowledge: Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Macintosh, Outlook, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat skills; will train to use Filemaker database. At least two years experience in print production management and design.

 

This position requires communication across the Books division to set, hold, and anticipate book publication schedules and issues, while maintaining quality (including file printability) with designers, book compositors, and printers.

 

Degree of independent action performed on the job: Proven ability to initiate and work independently and collaboratively; plan, prioritize, and meet multiple deadlines; and to work with minimum supervision in a busy department.

 

Internal and external contacts required as part of the job: The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work and communicate effectively with peers and senior staff at the Press as well as with outside vendor customer service and sales representatives.

 

This position requires teamwork and relationship building with people both inside and outside the Press. Internal: daily coordination with Books Editing, Acquisitions, Marketing, and our warehouse fulfillment division. External: daily coordination with typesetters, production services, printers, and freelance designers.

Sr. Programmer Analyst

The Senior Programmer Analyst is a member of Project MUSE's technical development team involved in software and database development. The position works with a small talented team who continues to output and design innovative publishing features in record time, with the quality and depth of a large organization.  Project MUSE has thrived on creating custom solutions, offering flexibility to both the product and the customer.  This position will report to the Manager, Publishing Technologies at Project MUSE.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops or modifies computer programs; develops test plans and performs unit, system and integrated testing for individual assignments, and or vendor software releases.
  • Database design, development and implementation, including user and system requirements collection, proto-typing and testing, application database schemes design and integration with applications, production maintenance and user support.
  • Develops, maintains, documents and tests new or existing programs; adheres to project wide standards for data collection/storage, structured programming techniques, documentation requirements, testing, reporting, software/hardware releases.
  • Uses programming knowledge and critical thinking to resolve moderately complex technical or procedural problems
  • Create reports and work with end users on report specifications; create and run queries as needed, both scripted and ad hoc.
  • Participates in institutional-level information technology initiatives as assigned.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
  • Manage several projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Expert experience with Web programming using Perl, CGI/Mod_Perl is required.
  • Experience with MySQL.
  • Working knowledge of JavaScript, (eg. JQuery), HTML, CSS is desirable.
  • Experience and or knowledge with XML and or XSLT would be a plus.
  • Knowledge to implement and or support data analytics projects (eg.WebBI, Tableau) a plus.
  • Working environment is UNIX.
  • Publishing Experience a bonus.
  • Ruby and Python a bonus but not required.

Bachelor's degree and three years related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards related experience. Significant undergraduate programming coursework or independent project can be considered as related experience.
