Renaissance Society of America Honors Henry Tom
Suzanne Flinchbaugh

While it is not unheard of at academic meetings to honor an author for his or her contributions to scholarship, it is the rare editor who is so recognized. And yet, a whole day of sessions were organized to honor the editorial vision of the late Henry Tom, JHUP executive editor, at the 2012 Renaissance Society of America meeting in Washington DC in March. It was a beautiful tribute. Many of Henry's authors as well as other scholars (many who knew him from their "salad" days in graduate school) presented papers during four sessions that were devoted to the impact of Henry's editorial career on early modern scholarship. The day provided an overview of his methods and approaches to acquiring books in the period, particularly in Italy. Henry's good friend and JHUP author, Zachary Schiffman, discussed Henry's curatorial vision of socio-cultural history, and how such history springs from culture that is rooted in community. At day's end, after much discussion, laughter, and some tears, JHUP author Monique O'Connell raised a glass of champagne and offered a toast not only to Henry's editorial vision, but also to his patience and guidance as a teacher--a legacy that will live on for years to come.
