Reviews in American History
Author Guidelines

General Information

Essays should offer a thorough summary of the book or books, as well as a critical evaluation of them in the light of existing literature.  The essay itself should have a title that is different from the title of the book under review.  Due to space limitations, we ask that you stay within the word length allotted to your review.  Please inform us if circumstances compel you to miss your deadline or make it impossible for you to complete your review.  Our general policy is that the review is due three months from the receipt of the book(s).
The editors reserve the right to reject manuscripts that do not conform to the critical standards of the journal.

Preparation of Manuscript

Manuscripts must be typed in any current versions of Microsoft Word, which is preferred, but WordPerfect will also be accepted.  Be sure to make a backup copy of the final version of your manuscript.  You will need to submit only an electronic copy of the manuscript, sent to our editorial office as an attachment to e-mail:  rah@mail.rochester.edu.  Your manuscript will be copyedited and sent back electronically for your approval.

HeadingPlease follow our heading style, supplying the following:

  • The title of your essay
  • Your full name
  • Publication information for the book(s) under review, as in this example:

Robin L. Einhorn.  Property Rules: Political Economy in Chicago, 1833–1872. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1991. xvii + 295 pp. Figures, maps, appendices, notes, bibliography, and index.  $32.50.

Style: Follow the Chicago Manual of Style on capitalization, quotations, hyphenation, etc.
When quoting directly from the book(s) under review, cite the page numbers in parentheses following the quote or at the end of the sentence and before the period, i.e. (p. 12).  When citing works for comparative purposes, cite only author, title, and (year) within the text rather than in notes.  Throughout, use italics rather than underlining.

Bio: At the end of the essay, include a two- or three-sentence biographical blurb with your name, affiliation, and latest publication or work-in-progress.

Notes: Do NOT use the software’s endnote function; instead insert superscript numbers1 in text manually and type the notes at the end of the essay in list form, following your biographical blurb.  (Endnote number style is 1. etc.) Follow Chicago Manual style for notes, but omit place and publisher.  Please keep notes to a minimum.
